A two-site private cloud for nearly 900 TB of business data
A client needed resilient infrastructure while retaining control of nearly 900 TB of critical data. We built Hyper-V and Synology clusters across two NEXTDC data centres, connected by dark fibre, with off-site backups.

Before
- Nearly 900 TB of live client data with no tolerance for loss or extended outages.
- Office-based servers had no automatic failover; a hardware failure could stop the business.
- No recovery site for a fire, flood or extended office power outage.
- Slow backup jobs shared the internet connection with staff traffic.
After
- Business data protected across two NEXTDC data centres.
- Four Hyper-V servers and four Synology appliances at each site.
- Clustered storage and live failover between nodes.
- Dark fibre links to the office and 2 Gbps symmetrical Vocus internet.
Built to keep working
We racked and configured a four-server Hyper-V cluster at each NEXTDC site, alongside Synology storage clusters. Replication and automatic failover provided a second location for critical systems.
Dark fibre connected the infrastructure and the client’s office. Veeam handled backup and copying to Wasabi over an express route, while the office’s Vocus 2 Gbps / 2 Gbps fibre was sized for the private cloud’s traffic.
“We now lose sleep over our clients’ work, not our infrastructure. Unicorn built us something that survives a datacentre going dark, and they proved it by pulling the plug in front of us.”
