Printer won't print
Printing faults are almost always one of four things: a warning on the device, a network problem, a stalled print queue, or the wrong printer selected. A test page printed from the device itself tells us which half of the chain to look at.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
- 1
Read the printer display
Check for paper out, paper jam, low or empty toner, an open door, or a waste-toner warning. Clear anything reported and open and close the front cover to reset the sensors.
- 2
Print a test page from the device
Use the printer's own menu (usually Reports or Information) to print a configuration or test page. If that fails, the fault is the printer itself. If it works, the fault is between your computer and the printer.
- 3
Confirm the printer is on the network
The configuration page shows the printer's IP address. If it is blank, shows 0.0.0.0 or a 169.254 address, the printer has lost its network connection — reseat the network cable or re-join it to Wi-Fi.
- 4
Check you selected the right printer
Open your print dialog and confirm the device name matches the one in front of you. Copies of the same printer with names ending in (Copy 1) or (Redirected) will silently fail.
- 5
Clear the queue and restart
Open the printer queue, cancel every stuck job, then restart your computer. That restarts the print spooler and clears jobs holding up everything behind them.
- 6
Try from a second computer
If a colleague can print to the same device, the problem is your computer's driver or queue, and we can rebuild that remotely.
