Setting up a new computer on your first day
Machines we supply arrive enrolled, so signing in with your work account pulls down your apps, printers and settings automatically. Work through this list and you'll be productive in under an hour.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
- 1
Connect to a network and sign in
Join your office Wi-Fi or plug in a cable, then sign in with your full work email address and password and approve the MFA prompt. Don't create a local account — that breaks management and encryption.
- 2
Let the first-run setup finish
Leave it plugged in on the desk for 30-60 minutes. Apps, security tools, printers and policies install in the background and it may restart more than once.
- 3
Set up OneDrive
Open OneDrive, sign in, and accept backing up Desktop, Documents and Pictures. Anything you save there is protected; anything outside it isn't.
- 4
Open Outlook and Teams
Both should sign in automatically. Outlook will download your mail — leave it running for the first hour to finish. Add your signature and check your calendar looks right.
- 5
Add printers and any line-of-business apps
Printers usually appear automatically at the office. If one is missing, or a specialist app you need isn't installed, log a ticket with the printer or app name rather than downloading anything yourself.
- 6
Check for updates
Run Windows Update (or Software Update on a Mac) and install everything, then restart. Do this before you start real work rather than mid-afternoon.
- 7
Hand the old machine back
Once you've confirmed your files and mail are all present, return the old computer to us. We wipe it to standard, remove it from management and either redeploy or dispose of it with a certificate.
Contact us straight away if…
- Sign-in is refused or the device says it isn't enrolled or compliant.
- Files from the old machine were never in OneDrive and are needed — don't wipe anything, log a ticket.
- Setup has been running for hours with no progress.
Include this in your ticket
- The new computer's make, model and name
- Your name, role and site
- Which apps and printers you need
- The old computer's name, if there is one
