Microsoft Teams Phone

How the Teams Phone licence works in Microsoft 365

To make real phone calls in Microsoft Teams you need three things. Here is what each one does and where Unicorn IT Group fits in.

1. A Microsoft 365 plan

Each user needs a Microsoft 365 or Office 365 plan that includes Microsoft Teams, such as Business Basic, Business Standard, Business Premium or an Enterprise plan.

2. A Teams Phone licence

Teams Phone is the Microsoft add-on that switches on the phone system inside Teams: a dial pad, call transfer, voicemail and group features. Without it, Teams can only make Teams-to-Teams calls.

3. A Teams Calling plan

The Teams Phone licence doesn't connect you to the public phone network by itself. Our Pay-As-You-Go or Unmetered plan provides your phone numbers and carries calls to landlines, mobiles and 13/1300 numbers.

What does Teams Phone cost?

The Teams Phone licence is a separate Microsoft licence, paid per user each month on top of your Microsoft 365 plan. The price depends on the plan you're on, and the per-user cost falls away entirely if you're already on Microsoft 365 E5, which usually includes Teams Phone. Meeting rooms and other shared devices use their own cheaper device licences rather than one per person. We check what licences you already have at no cost and supply any Teams Phone licences you need, so you only pay for the users who actually make or take calls.
