Inside Unicorn IT Group

A day in the life

This is what a normal Tuesday looks like for the team that would be looking after you. No heroics, no firefighting culture — just a disciplined rhythm that catches problems before your staff feel them.

Morning

6:45am

Overnight review before anyone logs in

The on-duty engineer reads the overnight queue: patch results, failed backup jobs, Huntress SOC notifications, disk and RAID warnings and Microsoft 365 service advisories. Anything that will bite a client at 8am is fixed before 8am.

7:15am

Backup verification stand-up

Every Cove and server backup job from the night before is checked against the schedule. Failures are re-run, and any client with two consecutive misses gets a phone call, not an email.

8:00am

Help desk opens

Phones, email and the support portal go live together. Tickets are triaged against the SLA — critical in 15 minutes, high in one hour — and assigned to the engineer who knows that client's environment.

9:30am

New starter, ready before morning tea

A request came in yesterday for a new estimator. Entra ID account, licence, mailbox, Teams, SharePoint permissions, MFA enrolment and an Autopilot laptop are all provisioned from our standard build. The user signs in once and everything is there.

10:45am

Project work in the workshop

While the desk runs, the project team images devices, stages switches and firewalls and builds the next migration. Every device is labelled, asset-tagged and documented before it leaves the bench.

Afternoon and after hours

Half of what we do never becomes a ticket. That is the point.

12:15pm

On-site with a client

An engineer is in a client boardroom fixing a Teams Room, checking the comms cabinet, replacing a noisy UPS battery and walking the office manager through next month's device refresh. Being seen matters as much as being available.

1:30pm

Security review

Secure Score, conditional access, risky sign-ins, quarantined mail and SentinelOne detections are reviewed tenant by tenant. Where a control is missing it becomes a task with an owner and a date, not a note in a report.

2:45pm

A real incident

Huntress flags a suspicious inbox rule on a client mailbox. The account is isolated, sessions revoked, password and MFA reset, mail rules removed, sign-in logs exported and the client called — all inside 20 minutes, then written up the same day.

4:00pm

Roadmap and account time

Account engineers work on quarterly reviews: what broke, what was patched, what is out of warranty, what licences can be reclaimed and where next year's budget should go. Boring, deliberate, and the reason clients stop having surprises.

5:30pm

Handover, then quiet

Open tickets are handed over with notes, after-hours change windows are confirmed and monitoring takes the night shift. Weekend and after-hours cover picks up anything critical, including display-home and clinic sites that trade on weekends.

Why our engineers stay

Engineers, not script readers

Everyone on our desk has hands on real infrastructure: Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, Hyper-V, WatchGuard, Ubiquiti, Meraki and 3CX. You will not be handed a script and told to escalate.

Documentation is the job

If it is not written down it is not finished. Our knowledge base is what lets any engineer pick up any client — which is also what stops 2am heroics.

Australian team, Australian hours

Local engineers in Perth and Sydney supporting clients nationally. No offshore hand-off, no waiting for a timezone to wake up.

Vendor time and certification

Lab access, vendor training and certification paths across Microsoft, SentinelOne, Huntress, WatchGuard, Cove and Ubiquiti — paid for, and scheduled in.

Variety most providers cannot offer

One month a mine-site wireless link, the next a 200-user tenancy build, then a 190-site medical network. Small enough to see the whole project, big enough for the interesting work.

No incentive to let things break

We are paid a fixed monthly fee, so a quiet month is a good month for everyone. That single fact shapes how the whole day runs.
